What kind of education Lada Center offers?

Children at the Lada Center Democratic School are not required to follow a strictly defined curriculum. Instead, they are encouraged to explore independently, learn based on their own interests, and develop their own learning paths. Learning is not driven by grades, but by intrinsic motivation.

For each child, a unique, private, and recognised programme is created, taking into account their interests, needs, and individual characteristics. The programme is developed in cooperation with the family and is adapted in both pace and form of delivery.

Lada Center fosters an environment where relationships matter, where cooperation between children and adults is encouraged, and where families are connected. Families actively participate in shaping their child’s educational journey.

What is self-directed education?

Self-directed education is a form of learning in which the individual – child, young person, or adult – decides for themselves what, when, how, and with whom they will learn. It is based on trust in each person’s intrinsic motivation and natural curiosity, especially that of children.

How does this education work?

Education at the Lada Center Democratic School is designed in line with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. This means respecting the child’s views, their right to freedom of expression, choice, and the development of their own identity.

Education in democratic school Lada Center takes place in a completely different way from conventional schooling. It is built on freedom, trust, and collaboration between the child, the family, and mentors. The main pillars of the Lada Center educational process are:

  • 🧒 Child at the centre
The learning process begins with the child’s interests, pace, and needs. The child co-creates their own learning path and actively participates in selecting the content.
  • 🤝 Mentor guidance

Mentors are companions on the journey of exploration – encouraging, guiding, and supporting without imposing content. They build authentic, trusting relationships with the child.

  • 🌍 Learning as part of life

Learning happens naturally – through everyday experiences, projects, conversations, creativity, and practical work. It is not artificially separated from life.

  • 🗂️ Portfolio approach

Instead of grades, a child’s progress is documented in a portfolio that includes creations, reflections, project descriptions, and other authentic evidence of learning.

  • 👨‍👩‍👧 Connection with family

Families are active partners in the learning process. Together with mentors, they co-create the learning plan and support the child in everyday exploration.

  • 🔄 Flexibility and freedom
Education is not tied to a school timetable or grade levels. Children learn at their own pace, in ways that suit them best – anywhere, anytime, and in environments where they feel safe.

How is assessment carried out?

At the Lada Center democratic school, assessment is not focused on numbers but on the child as a whole person who learns, grows, and develops life competencies.

Instead of traditional grades, we use reflective and developmental monitoring to help the child understand their journey, recognise their strengths, and continue learning responsibly.

Each child creates their own personal portfolio to record projects, thoughts, creations, and other key steps. The portfolio shows competency development over time and provides insight into the child’s thinking, effort, and personal progress.

Progress monitoring takes place in open discussions between the child, mentor, and parents. These meetings are not about comparison but about supporting the child’s individual path and personal goals.

Organisation membership at Lada Center

Together, we co-create environments where children’s rights are brought to life in practice.

Does your organisation already create a space where children feel safe, heard, and respected? Do they come to your programmes, events, and workshops with joy and enthusiasm? If your answer is “yes”, then you already share the core values that Lada Center lives by.

If your answer is “yes”, then you already share the core values that Lada Center lives by.

At Lada Center, alongside our vision of a free school, we are especially committed to building connections with organisations, communities, and companies that believe in the power of education grounded in children’s rights. We seek to co-create a society where children are recognised as active and valued conversation partners – today, not just in the future. With you, we want to open doors early for young people into a world that respects their integrity and includes them as collaborators – not merely observers.

What you gain from membership

  • Logo of your organisation on the main page of web site Lada Center.
